Beach

Bateau Bay lies 500 m south of Blue Lagoon and is surrounded by the southern section of Wyrrabalong National Park. The curving 200 m long beach (NSW 282) faces southeast, but is protected from waves and wind by two prominent headlands and extensive rock platforms and reefs (Fig. 4.168). These completely encircle the small bay, resulting in low waves and a steep reflective beach. The beach is backed by densely vegetated bluffs rising to 20 m then the suburbs of Bateau Bay. The boundary of Wyrrabalong National Park cross the middle of the beach and backing bluffs and includes 4 km of rocky coast to the south. Access is available from a car park on the rear bluffs, providing a short steep walk to the beach.

Swimming

Usually low waves under normal conditions. Beware of the deep water and rocks and reefs close inshore. Higher waves produce a heavy shorebreak and rip draining the bay.

Surfing

None in the bay, however the reefs at the bay mouth can provide reasonable lefts and rights. One kilometre to the south is Crackneck Point, which can be reached via the southern rock platform. It holds a heavy lefthander, which works best with northeast and east swell. To check it out drive to Crackneck Lookout located 100 m above the break.

Fishing

There are sand and rock flats off the beach, with the wide southern rock platform giving the best access to deeper water. You can make your way along the rocks all the way south to Forresters.
