PATROLLED BEACH

Beach number: nsw320B
State/Region: NSW - Bondi Beach
Beach name: BONDI
General Beach Hazard Rating: 7
Least hazardous: 1-3
Moderately hazardous: 4-6
Highly hazardous: 7-8
Extremely hazardous: 9-10
Hazard rating refers to physical beach and surf conditions ONLY and does not include potentially dangerous marine life.
Beach

The main central-southern section of Bondi Beach (NSW 320b) continues for another 650 m to the southern rocks and rock pool. It faces southeast into the prevailing waves, which average 1.6 m and maintain a continuous bar usually cut by 2-3 rips and at times separated from the shore by a longshore trough. A persistent large and often strong rip, called the Backpacker Express, runs out against the southern headland. The beach is patrolled by Bondi SLSC, which usually maintains a patrol area in front of the pavilion, with swimming not recommended along the rip-dominated southern half. This more hazardous area is more popular with board riders than swimmers. Consequently, while less popular for swimming than the northern end of the beach, it has nearly twice as many rescues, 274 each year.

Swimming

The lowest waves and best swimming is in the northern half in the patrolled areas. However rips are always present so use care at Bondi and stay between the flags and well clear of the boundary rips and rocks. The beach is patrolled by lifeguards year round, as well as the surf clubs during the summer.

Surfing

Bondi picks up all southerly swell and usually has persistent beach breaks. During big swell the northern point, Ben Buckler produces a good left. The central portion is closed to boards, leaving the higher waves and strong rips of south Bondi to the board riders. The beach breaks are of variable quality with the left into the southern headland rip holding waves up to 2.5 m.

Fishing

Owing to the popularity of the beach most fishing is restricted to the rocks to each end, both ends having permanent gutters.
