Beach

On the western side of Bradleys Head is the open, southwest-facing Athol Bay, which has two small beaches located on its western, south-facing shore. The first is a 100 m long moderately steep beach (SH 28) backed by a low 5 m wide grassy berm, then steep rocky slopes, with a rock and timber jetty at the eastern end and the access road to Taronga Wharf above the western end. The second is Whiting Beach (SH 29), a 90 m long south-facing beach, backed by densely vegetated slopes, with a small creek pooling behind the centre of the beach and vegetated slopes rising behind to Taronga Zoo. Little Sirius Point borders the western end.

Swimming

All the northern Sydney Harbour beaches are relatively safe under normal low wave to calm conditions. Some like Sandy Bay and Sirius Cove never receive ocean waves, while Washaway, Reef and Obelisk commonly receive low swell. The biggest hazard to children and non-swimmers is the often deep water off many of the beaches, and boating activity off some of the beaches.

Surfing

None, except during huge outside swell when surfers head for Dobroyd Point, Grotto Head, Edwards and Balmoral beaches.

Fishing

The entire harbour shoreline attract thousands of anglers, with most fishing from the relatively safe rocks and many jetties, as well as off the beaches fronted by deeper water.
