Beach

Currumbin beach is a 750 m long, north-east facing beach that extends from 10 m high Currumbin Rock down to 15 m high, humpy Elephant Rock (Fig. 4.159). Currumbin Creek flows out on the north side of the point and, to contain the inlet and shifting tidal shoals, both sides of the creek have been stabilised by the construction of rock groynes. The groyne in front of Currumbin Point extends 300 m from the road in front of the point out to Currumbin Rock. The groyne and point have partly stabilised a 300 m long, low energy beach and low sand spit (1594). This is a popular and very accessible beach, with calm conditions in the inlet and low waves toward the point, however it is fronted by the deep, shifting tidal shoals and channel, together with strong tidal currents.

Swimming

This is a potentially hazardous beach owing to the persistent rips and strong permanent rips against the rocks, particularly at Currumbin Rock. The safest bathing is at the inlet beach and at the southern patrolled end of the surf beach. Stay on the inner bar and well clear of the rocks and rips.

Surfing

There are beach breaks on the inner and outer bars, however Currumbin is best known for the classic right-hand break that wraps around the north side of Currumbin Point. Most surfers walk out along the northern groyne before paddling out.

Fishing

There is both good beach fishing into the rip holes and rock fishing off Currumbin and Elephant Rocks, as well as fishing into Currumbin Creek.

General

This beach is a little off the highway, but a popular spot with swimmers, surfers, windsurfers and fishers.
