Beach

Alma Bay (MT5) is a very picturesque little bay, just 150 m in width at the beach. It faces due east and has two prominent granite headlands running out for 300 m on either end of the beach. Large granite boulders and rocks fringe the beach. The main island road runs past the back of the beach, with a foreshore reserve between the road and the beach (Figs. 4.34 & 4.35). The Arcadian Surf Life Saving Club, named after the backing settlement, was founded in 1928 and occupies the centre of the reserve.

The beach is often calm and only receives waves when the south-easterlies are blowing. The waves have built a gently sloping beach, that is 50 m wide at high tide and more than doubles in size at low tide. Rocks and boulders fringe each end of the beach and run out into the bay.

Swimming

This is a relatively safe beach, so long as you stay in the bay and close inshore. Be careful if swimming or snorkelling around the rocks as waves can surge and break over them.

Surfing

There is usually no surf. A strong south-easterly is required to have waves breaking in the bay.

Fishing

A popular spot to fish off the rocks. However be careful, as they are steep in places.

General

A very accessible and attractive little bay, with adequate facilities for the day-tripper, and a relatively safe place to swim.

Carpark

Type: Formal parking area
