Weeroona Island

UNPATROLLED BEACH

Beach

Germein Bay is an open west facing 14 km wide bay that extends north of Port Pirie. Port Pirie is located on the banks of the Port Pirie River, a large tidal creek that drains into the southern end of the bay. Extensive mangrove woodlands dominate the southern Port Pirie shores, which extends north for 4 km to Weeroona Island. The western side of the Island and the central-northern section of the bay are free of mangroves and dominated by low energy beaches fronted by wide sand flats. Weeroona Island beach (552) wraps round the western half of the 1 km wide Island for 1.6 km, the eastern half being surrounded by mangroves. The Island, while detached from the mainland at high tide, is linked by the tidal flats at low tide, with a 300 m long causeway to the mainland. The beach borders the southern, western and northern shore and generally consists of a narrow high tide beach, backed by 20 shacks along the southern shore, and larger freehold holdings along the northern shore, all backed by grassy slopes rising to the 30 m high Island crest. The beaches are fronted by a narrow strip of sand then vegetated tidal flats which extends for hundreds of meters north and south, except on the western side where they are truncated by the tidal channel.

Swimming

Because of the wide, shallow sand flats you can only swim toward high tide.

Surfing

None.

Fishing

Its long walk but the end of the Port Germein jetty is still the best location.

General

Four accessible, very low energy beaches with facilities at Port Germein.
