Beach
American Beach refers to both a beach and a small holiday settlement nestled on the bluffs 2 km south of the beach (Fig. 5.6). Surrounding the settlement are five low wave beaches. The beaches and settlement are serviced by the main Hog Bay Road, which runs 100 to 300 m inland.
Beach KI-39 borders the western side of the settlement. It runs north for 1.1 km as a low energy, undulating sand beach, fronted by a bar which widens to the north, to 100 m wide sand flats in lee of a small vegetated islet off High Dune Point. A foredune backs the beach, with a few houses behind the northern half of the beach.
Swimming
These are five relatively low wave beaches which are better at high tide, owing to the shallow bars and sand flats exposed at low tide. Watch for rocks and rock flats on some of the beaches.
Surfing
None.
Fishing
Better off the bluffs at high tide.
General
American Beach is a small settlement with no facilities other than the boat ramp, and the surrounding beaches.
