Benedore River 3
State/Region:
VIC - Wingan River
Post Code:

General Beach Hazard Rating:
9/10 (Extremely hazardous)

Beach

The central portion of the open embayment between Little Rame Head and Sandpatch Point is occupied by four beaches, which lie either side of the Benedore River entrance. The river mouth is dammed by the beach and forms a 1 km long, narrow, winding lake behind the beach. The four Benedore River Beaches all face south-east and receive waves averaging 1.5 m, which interact with the sand to produce a continuous outer bar, cut by rips every 300 m on the longer beaches. The bar continues off the two western beaches (30 & 31), with the beach itself and inner surf zone dominated by steeply dipping jagged rocks.

The only access is via the coastal walking track, which reaches the coast at the Benedore River mouth, after bypassing Little Rame Head. It then follows the beach for 1.5 km, exiting at the end of beach 31; to bypass Sandpatch Point. Water is available at this exit.

Swimming

The main beaches are dominated by rips and occasional rocks, while the western two are rock strewn. It is best to bathe near the river mouth (if closed), however the beach is steep and there is a deep trough and rips between the beach and the bar. So use extreme caution if entering the surf on this remote beach.

Surfing

Beach breaks on the outer bar, however watch the rocks.

Fishing

A deep gutter usually runs the length of the main beaches, with numerous rocks and reefs just off the beach.

General

The beach provides a refreshing change for those on the walking track and a chance to cool off. However, unless you are an experienced surfer, it's better to swim in the Benedore River.
