Beach

Bonbeach Beach forms the southern end of the 7.7 km long beach that includes Bonbeach, Chelsea, Edithvale and Aspendale Beaches. Bonbeach is 1.5 km long, beginning at the northern Patterson River entrance wall and merging with adjoining Chelsea Beach to the north. All four beaches are located near their respective railway stations. Bonbeach has a lifesaving club, however access to the club is down a narrow street and parking is very limited. The club was formed in 1933 and is housed in an old, timber building.

The beach faces west-south-west and is exposed to the full force of westerly winds and waves, which interact with the fine sand to build a beach fronted by three bars extending 200 m bayward. The inner bar usually consists of alternating shallow bars and deeper rip holes, while the outer bars become increasingly straight. The outer two bars are usually inactive during low waves and calms. Strong winds and high waves are required to mobilise the bars and change their configuration. However near the river mouth, strong tidal currents can be encountered.

Swimming

Safest in front of the lifesaving club on the shallow sections of the inner bar. Stay well clear of the river mouth which has deep water, currents and power boats. Watch children, as deeper rip holes and troughs lie adjacent to the inner bar.

Surfing

During strong westerlies, wind waves up to 2 m high break over the outer bars, providing sloppy beach breaks.

Fishing

The river mouth is the most popular spot.

General

A beach for locals and train travellers, as parking is very limited.
