Beach

Mordialloc Beach is the southern section of a 4 km long beach running from Mordialloc Creek to the bluffs at Mentone. The beach has three sections, each with a lifesaving club, at Mordialloc, Parkdale and Mentone. The Mordialloc section is backed by an extensive foreshore reserve, that has a number of facilities including the pier, a large car park, park and picnic areas. It also has a lovely, curving promenade running behind the beach from the pier to the lifesaving club and beyond. The Mordialloc Life Saving Club was founded in 1919. Today it is fronted by fenced dunes and a wide beach. The good rail and road access, car parking and other facilities, make this a very popular beach. The Mordialloc section is 1 km long, faces the south-west and extends to the north of the 300 m long Mordialloc pier and adjacent drain entrance wall. The beach has been nourished to help combat erosion toward the Parkdale and Mentone ends, and can be more than 50 m wide. It is fronted by two bars: the inner bar usually attached to the beach, with rips cutting it every 150 m; with a deeper trough separating it from the outer bar.

Swimming

Safest on the attached, shallow sections of the inner bar and clear of the rip holes and troughs, particularly in the patrolled area. Warning: Do not jump off the pier, as there is shallow water underneath and serious injuries can result.

Surfing

During strong westerlies, wind waves up to 2 m high break over the outer bars, providing sloppy beach breaks.

Fishing

The pier is the most popular spot, giving access to deeper water, while the adjoining breakwater is used to fish Mordialloc Creek.

General

A well developed and popular beach, with the added safety of the lifesaving club and the attraction of the pier.
