Between Mills Beach and Sunnyside North is a 2.5 km section of coast containing four beaches, that are either dominated or bounded by sandstone rocks, reefs and bluffs. Caraar Creek crosses the southern end of Caraar Beach. Access is limited to street parking on the bluffs behind Mills East, Caraar and Sunnyside, while Sunnyside North is only accessible on foot around the rocks.
The four beaches all face north-west and are exposed to westerly winds and accompanying waves. These produce a near continuous outer surf zone during storm conditions. During the more regular low waves, Mills Beach East and Caraar Beach have a steep, narrow beach and a surf zone dominated by rocks and reefs; and the two Sunnyside beaches have a bar cut by one to two rip channels, particularly against the rocks.
Mills East and Caraar are only suitable for bathing at high tide in calm conditions, as there are many rocks off the beach. When waves are breaking, strong currents also occur amongst the rocks. The two Sunnyside beaches are relatively safe during low waves, however any surf will intensify the longshore and rip currents, particularly against the bluffs.
Only at the Sunnyside beaches during westerly gales, when 1 to 2 m wind waves will break on the bars.
Best off the rocks at Mills East and Caraar, and on the rocks either side of the Sunnyside beaches.
Four relatively natural beaches, with Sunnyside North also being an official Optional Dress (ie. nude) Beach.
