Although there are no records of tsunami being generated by asteroid impact, the effect of such an event could be catastrophic. In 1997, scientists discovered evidence of a four kilometre diameter asteroid that landed off Chile approximately two million years ago. Scientists believe it produced a tsunami that swept over portions of South America and Antarctica.
