Where does Surf Life Saving fit in the warning system?

Surf Life Saving (SLS) also works very closely with council lifeguard services in managing Australia's beaches. SLS is the frontline authority in regards to beach management if a situation occurs on the Australian coastline. SLS has the capacity to assist in the following ways:

  • Warning the beach-going public through its communication points around the coastline, using public address systems.
  • Providing rescue and emergency care capacity through the active membership and surf club and support operation services.

SLS will act per the direction and tasking by the state/territory emergency authority in the event of a tsunami. Please see the 'Surf Life Saving Australia' section of this resource for more information.
