The northern Barmouth beach (NSW 673) usually consists of a narrow irregular southeast-facing strip of sand between 200 to 500 m long, wedged between the backing slopes and rocks and the river, with the tidal shoals and river channels paralleling the beach. The southern beach (NSW 674) lies on the southern side of the river 700 m to the west, in lee of Haycock Point, where it faces northwest. It is a sheltered 130 m long beach bordered by rocky points, and fronted by the shallow river mouth shoals, and normally removed from the deeper channel. Both beaches change length and nature depending on the location and shape of the main channels. Always check for tidal flows before entering the water at either beach.
