Disaster Bay beach (NSW 710) trends southwest from the base of the Green Cape rocky shore, below the 140 m high Disaster Bay lookout, for 2.4 km to the narrow river entrance. It is backed by a 500 m wide barrier, crossed by two usually dry creeks and then the steep densely vegetated slopes rising to 200 m. Waves average 1-1.5 m and maintain a usually attached bar, cut by rips every 200-300 m with the narrow inlet at the southern end (Fig. 4.435). There is no formal land access, with most people coming down the river by boat to the rear of the river mouth spit. Be careful if boating though the river mouth as it is very exposed and some boats have been overturned.
