Port Botany and Sydney Airport protrude 2 and 3 km respectively into Botany Bay. In between the two is 2 km of sheltered south-facing shoreline that contains three beaches (BB 6-8). Beach BB 6 is a curving 400 m long spit of sand that has accumulated on the northwestern tip of the container terminal. With sand moving along the outer wall and accumulating as a curving spit between the wall and a boat ramp at the end of Penrhyn Road, boat traffic has to go out around the spit to enter the bay. Directly opposite the boat ramp, across a 100 m wide inlet, is beach BB 7, a 270 m long southwest-facing beach, fronted by 70 m wide intertidal sand flats, and bounded in the north by a rock groyne. The main Foreshore Drive beach (BB 8) commences at the rock groyne and trends to the northwest for 1.5 km as a low energy beach and sand flats to the mouth of Mill Stream, whose western side to bounded by the seawall for Sydney Airport. The busy Foreshore Drive backs the entire beach, with several small car parks and an access point through a low dune to the beach. These three beaches are primarily used for boat launching at BB 6 and fishing.
