Lake Macquarie entrance flows out between two training walls, the southern wall against Swansea Heads. Between the wall and the tip of the heads, called Reids Mistake, is a sheltered 100 m long sandy beach (NSW 251). The beach is accessible by road with car parking immediately behind next to a sewer works. The beach itself is well protected from waves by the wall and point and is a low wave beach, usually fronted by a shallow bar. Because of the sewer outlet it is unsuitable for swimming or fishing, The eastern side of Swansea Heads largely consists of sedimentary rocks of the Newcastle Coal Measures, which are cliffed with well-developed rock platforms, extending 2 km south of the heads. One kilometre to the south is a curving 100 m long sand beach (NSW 252) lying at the base of vegetated bluffs and fronted by cobbles, boulders and rocks in the surf.
