Amaya beach (NT 1403) commences on the southern side of the reef that projects seaward of beach NT 1402. The beach initially faces south, curving round for 3.6 km to face east against the southern low rocks. The beach is composed of coarse shell-rich sand and has a steep beach face backed by a 300 m wide grassy beach ridge plain, with two interconnected 40 ha freshwater wetlands behind the southern half of the beach. A creek diagonally crosses the beach ridges to flow out toward the centre of the beach, while sand flats front the beach, grading into patchy rock and coral flats toward the south.
