The western shore of Upstart Bay has four beaches between the southern channel of the Burdekin River, Groper Creek and Molongle Creek. All four are accessible by vehicle and have some degree of fishing shack and holiday settlements. Wunjunga Beach (899) begins on the south side of the low bluff and the southern slopes of Big Hill. It is connected to the highway by a 10 km long road that reaches the beach 4 km south of the settlement, then parallels the back of the beach. The beach is 13.6 km long, faces north-east and is backed by up to 15 older beach ridges in the north, while to the south it is a 7 km long recurved spit. It is at times breached in the middle, and a creek flows across the beach just south of where the road turns north. There is also a 4WD track leading to a small southern settlement on the inside of the southern tip of the beach. The beach consists of a moderately steep and narrow high tide beach, fronted by wide tidal flats off the northern and southern creek mouths, but which narrow in the middle to a 100 m wide bar.
