For 4 km south of the Barron River mouth and delta, the shoreline protrudes over 2 km seaward as a result of sediment deposited by the river. In fact, the main river mouth used this part of the delta until a switch in river channels in 1939. Much of this area is low-lying tidal flats with extensive mangroves, with thin strips of beach fronted by tidal flats extending a further 1 km out into Trinity Bay. There are two beaches along this dynamic section; a 2 km strip of sand running around Casuarina Point called Barron Beach, and a 1 km strip around Ellie Point. Both are low-lying tidal flats and are bordered by the Barron River and Airport Creek.
