Black Rock reef lies 600 m east of a 300 m high, densely vegetated spur. On either side of the spur are two small beaches. The northern beach (687) is 150 m long, faces north-east, has a small headland as its northern boundary and high rocky slopes to the south, together with some rocks scattered across the beach. The southern beach (688) faces east, is surrounded on three sides by steep vegetated slopes, and is fronted by a coral reef up to 100 m wide.
