Cowie Bay is a 1.7 km long, east facing beach extending south from 60 m high Cowie Point to a low, reef fringed headland. Melissa Creek drains across the northern end of the beach, and Bind Creek across the southern end, with fringing reefs adjacent to both headlands. The beach lies 1 km off the Cooktown Road, however there is no formal vehicle access. The beach is backed by a low, 200 m wide sand barrier, and fronted by a gently sloping 100 m wide bar. Waves averaging about 0.5 m break across the bar as a low choppy surf.
