Thornton Beach is situated on the northern shore of Alexandria Bay and on the northern side of Cooper Creek mouth. The Cooktown Road runs just behind the beach, with a shop and kiosk on the road, a public camping area and several vehicle access tracks to the beach. This popular beach faces south-east and receives some surf along the northern end, however the central and southern part of the 1 km long beach is protected by Stuck Island and the tidal flats of Cooper Creek. The beach is wide and flat, with high tide almost reaching the trees, while at low tide a 200 m wide bar and sand flats front the beach.
