Double Point is an 80 m high, densely vegetated headland lying at the northern end of Cowley Beach. The point was an island when the coast was flooded by rising sea level 6000 years ago. It has since been joined to the mainland, as the beaches to either side built out over 3 km. On the north side of the point are two beaches, linked by sand, but separated at high tide by a small, 25 m high, rocky point linked by a sandy tombolo. Both beaches are part of an army training reserve and are off-limits to the public beyond the high water mark. There is no development on either beach and no access tracks. The main Browns Beach (771) is 1.6 km long, faces east and is bounded by a 40 m high northern headland and the southern tombolo. It is backed by the densely vegetated, 2 km wide, low beach-foredune ridge plain. It receives waves averaging 0.5 m, that break across a 100 m wide bar at low tide and surge across a narrow surf zone and up the narrow tree-lined beach at high tide. Rips are usually absent.
Beach Length: 1.6km
