Cedar Bay is an open, 7 km long, east facing bay, contained in an amphitheatre of steep, densely vegetated slopes rising to over 600 m within 2 km of the shore. The bay contains two beaches; the main northern beach (663) is 3.5 km long and runs south in a crenulate fashion from the mouth of the small Ashwell Creek to the headland below 590 m high Mount Finlay.
On the southern side of this headland is the 700 m long southern beach (664), a straight beach wedged in below slopes that rise steeply to Mount Ramsay. Three pockets of fringing reef lie along the northern beach with open water in between, while the southern beach has no reef.
