On the south side of Monkhouse Point is a relatively straight, 3.5 km long, east facing beach that runs down to the mouth of the Annan River. The Cooktown Golf Course occupies the low dunes behind the northern section of the beach, with some of the greens lying within 100 m of the beach. The beach can be accessed via the golf course, or along a 4WD track that runs along the base of Monkhouse Point to the northern end of the beach, and then runs down the length of the soft beach to the river mouth.
The beach is relatively narrow and steep at high tide, while at low tide waves break across a continuous narrow bar. A foredune and some vegetated blowouts back the beach, while the southern end protrudes into the river mouth as a 500 m long spit. In addition, an extensive tidal delta fronts the southern 1 km of beach, while the deep river channel with strong tidal currents lies off the tip of the spit.
Beach Length: 3.5km
