The Boyne River is a medium size upland river that reaches the coast between rocky Canoe Point and the southern end of Boyne Island. Houses occupy the bluffs along the northern side of the river mouth, while the low Canoe Point has a large picnic area. There is road access and parking at the picnic area and a coastal walking track running right around the point to Tannum Sands, providing good access to both beaches. The point consists of low rock flats, with a series of low, vegetated recurved spits forming the western beach. Beach 1430, on the western side of the point, is 1 km long and faces due north across the 200 m wide river mouth. The beach consists of a moderately steep, sandy high tide beach, with tidal shoals that widen from 50 m in the west to 500 m off the point. At the point the rock flats extend 100 to 200 m seaward.
