On the southern side of the inlet is the 9 km long Middle Island beach (1461). This east to east-south-east facing beach curves around gently and ends at Middle Creek. Middle Creek connects with Pancake Creek, on the western side of Clews Point, to surround the island at high tide. There is however a low tide crossing, which provides 4WD access to the island and creek mouth, and on to Bustard Head. The island is entirely composed of Pleistocene and Holocene beach-foredune ridges, with up to twenty Holocene ridges prograding up to 3.5 km into the bay. It is, together with the adjoining islands, the most massive foredune ridge plain south of Cowley Beach, 2500 km to the north. The beach is exposed to all easterly waves, which average 0.5 to 1 m. These and occasional higher waves maintain a 30 m wide high tide beach, a 100 m wide low tide bar and an outer bar that is commonly cut by rips every 150 m, with up to 50 rips occurring along the beach. A 10 m high, casuarina-covered foredune, scarped in places, backs the beach, while off each inlet are 200 to 300 m wide tidal shoals.
