South Stradbroke Island is a 21 km long, relatively narrow island between Jumpinpin Inlet and the training walls of the Gold Coast Seaway at Nerang. The island is less than 1 km wide for most of its length, widening to 2.5 km along the central section. Unlike its northern neighbour, the entire island is less than 20 m high, consisting of a high frontal foredune complex backed by lower swampy land. There has been a substantial dune stabilisation program on the island that has succeeded in vegetating and stabilising much of the foredunes. There are two settlements on the western side of the island, in the north at Tipplers resort and in the south at the older Currigee settlement, that has a small boat harbour. Access to the island is by boat, with a 4WD required to travel the island's sandy tracks and beach. The beach (1590) faces due east and runs relatively straight between the two inlets. It receives waves averaging 1.5 m, which maintain an energetic, rip dominated double bar system. The inner bar is cut by rips every 200 to 250 m, with up to 100 rips operating along the beach. These rips flow into the longshore trough, then out across the outer bar.
