Beach 817 is a pocket of sand surrounded on three sides by steep, grass-covered slopes that rise to 100 to 250 m. At the base of the slopes is the 400 m long beach and a low, densely covered foredune. The high tide beach is low and narrow, while at low tide an 80 m wide bar is exposed, usually with rips running out against the rocks and two along the beach.
