Zoe Bay occupies the front of a 2 km wide, 4 km long valley that has been largely infilled with sand and mud. The 2.5 km long beach forms a spit toward the seaward end of the valley, with the high valley sides narrowing to a width of 1.5 m to form the valley and bay mouth. Behind the beach, the flat valley floor is occupied by a meandering tidal creek and extensive mangroves, while steep slopes, rising to several hundred metres, surround the valley. The beach faces east and receives waves averaging 0.5 m. These have built the fine beach sands into a low, narrow high tide beach fronted by a very low gradient, 150 m wide, intertidal sand bar, with the low waves spilling across a 100 m wide surf zone (Fig. 4.26). The main valley creek maintains an inlet at the northern end of the beach and flows out across a 400 m wide tidal delta, that is also exposed at low tide. A smaller creek also drains across the very southern end of the beach.
