In lee of West Hill Island lies the 400 m wide mouth of West Hill Creek, with bedrock shore to the north and the northern end of a 6 km long barrier system to the south, 7 km2 of which lies within the West Hill National Park. Two low energy beaches lie either side of the creek mouth, while the barrier is the last relatively high energy beach on this section of coast before the more protected beaches of Broad Sound.
Carmila beach (1199) provides the first good vehicle access to the coast south of Green Hill, and the best boat ramp. There is a 6 km long road out through the sugar cane farms from the small highway stop of Carmila to the creek mouth of the same name. There is a concrete boat ramp and small shack settlement on the southern side of the creek mouth and a camping reserve with limited facilities immediately to the south. A track runs the length of the 2 km long beach down to the mouth of Feather Creek, that forms the southern boundary. Carmila Creek runs out in lee of some shelly beachrock that has anchored the creek mouth. The beach faces due east, however it is relatively protected by the offshore Flat Islands and extensive tidal flats. It has a relatively steep, 30 to 50 m wide high tide beach, with low tide exposing up to 1 km of intertidal sand flats (Figs 1.26a & 4.70).
