Sand Bay is an open, low energy, east facing bay extending south of Andrews Point for 5 km to Williamsons beach. The bay shore and much of the bay is dominated by extensive tidal sand shoals and channels, that give the bay its name. Apart from Andrews Point and two knolls, most of the shore and backing country is low and flat, with several square kilometres of mangroves backing the beaches and comprising the shore. Apart from the Cape Hillsborough Road that clips the northern bay beach and a couple of 4WD tracks across the tidal flats, there is no development on the 30 km of bay shore. In the western centre of the bay is a 1 km long, 40 m high bedrock outcrop surrounded by tidal flats and mangroves. Along the eastern side of the bedrock are the two Belmunda beaches. The northern one (1099) is 500 m long and backed by a densely vegetated, sandy plain with a southern headland, while the main beach (1100) is 1 km long and backed by grassy bedrock slopes, with rocks also outcropping along the beach. Sandy tidal flats extend 1 km off the northern beach, decreasing to 200 m off the southern beach.
Beach Length: 0.5km
General Hazard Rating: 1/10
