Sand Bay is an open, low energy, east facing bay extending south of Andrews Point for 5 km to Williamsons beach. The bay shore and much of the bay is dominated by extensive tidal sand shoals and channels, that give the bay its name. Apart from Andrews Point and two knolls, most of the shore and backing country is low and flat, with several square kilometres of mangroves backing the beaches and comprising the shore. Apart from the Cape Hillsborough Road that clips the northern bay beach and a couple of 4WD tracks across the tidal flats, there is no development on the 30 km of bay shore.
Nobbies Creek exits into the north-western, mangrove dominated corner of the bay. Immediately east of the mangroves and paralleling part of the cape road is a 1 km long, south-east facing, low, narrow, low energy high tide beach (1098), fronted by 1.5 km of intertidal sand flats and backed by mangroves.
