Hay Point is a prominent headland, now dominated by a large coal loading facility and two long jetties extending north-east from the point. The point is serviced by the small settlement of Hay Point, that includes a beachfront hotel and caravan park, but no shops. The Hay Point Road runs right out to the point and provides good access to the beach. Hay Point beach (1133) extends for 2.2 km south of the point to a small creek and the 800 m long harbour breakwater. The breakwater was constructed between a natural rock reef and the small Highwater Islet; it now protects the southern end of the beach which is slowly infilling with sand, with the shoreline having built out over 100 m. A road runs 100 m in along the back of the beach to the northern point, with the hotel and caravan park at the southern end. There is also a good launching ramp at the breakwater. The beach receives waves averaging 0.5 m and consists of a moderately steep high tide beach fronted by a 100 m wide, continuous low tide bar. A small creek drains across the southern end where there is also a patch of rock flats.
