At Covering beach the low, sandy and muddy coast of the Proserpine and O’Connell Rivers gives way to a gradually rising upland coast, with the Connors Hills paralleling the coast 2 to 5 km inland and rising to over 300 m. The shoreline faces north-east between the O’Connell River and Midgeton and is dominated by rocky shores, with low energy rock and tidal flats covered by varying degrees of mangroves. In amongst the rocks and mangroves is a near-continuous, irregular strip of high tide sand that comprises the ‘beaches’. Covering Beach is the name given to a 2 km stretch of low, rocky shoreline fronted by the narrow high tide beach, sand and rock flats and mangroves. The beach is divided into three sections (1056, 1057, 1059) by a small, rocky outcrop and by Covering Creek. The beach has traditionally been backed by grazing land, however in the mid 1990’s the Laguna Quay resort, including shorefront golf course and marina, was developed. Now the beach is the centre of the major development.
