Midgeton is the only settlement on the western shores of Repulse Bay. There is nothing north (except the Laguna Quay Resort) until Conway beach, 20 km away, and nothing south until Seaforth, 27 km away. The lack of development of the bay reflects its remoteness from any major towns, the hilly interior (which diverts the highway up to 20 km inland), the dead-end and poor quality of many of the coastal access tracks and the low energy, shallow nature of the bay shore, that has precluded port development. Dempster Creek is located 2 km south of Midgeton. It has a 500 m wide creek mouth that flows out between two low energy, rocky shores. On the north side, conical, 60 m high Mount Midge overlooks the creek, while to the south is a 30 m high hill. On the north side of the creek are two headland-bound, low energy beaches. The northern Dempster Creek beach (1063) is 300 m long, faces south-east and consists of a sandy high tide beach, fronted by over 1 km of variable sandy tidal flats and the channel of Dempster Creek. The land behind the beach and most of Mount Midge has been cleared and there is vehicle access to the beach.
