Three kilometre long Rabbit Island consists of northern and southern rock sections, with maximum elevations of 75 m and 96 m respectively, joined by the southern beach and its low foredune, with a 1 km2 mangrove swamp behind the beach. The three beaches (1081, 1082, 1083) are similar in character, all facing east-north-east, and are 700 m, 300 m and 650 m in length respectively. Each beach is bounded by densely vegetated, 20 m high headlands that are fringed by rock flats. The beaches are backed by low, narrow, casuarina-covered foredunes and receive waves averaging 0.5 m, which maintain a moderately steep high tide beach fronted by a 100 m wide low tide bar. The southern beach also has intertidal rock flats along its southern half. Apart from four primitive camp sites there are no facilities on the island.
