St Helens Beach houses one of the few settlements along this section of coast. The 2.3 km long, north-east facing beach lies 12 km east of the highway and is backed by two groups of about 100 houses. A low, rocky, mangrove-fringed point forms the northern boundary of the beach (1080), while a tidal inlet and 65 m high, conical Skull Knob border the southern end. The beach lies in lee of Rabbit Island, located 5 km to the east, and is well protected from most waves. As a result the beach consists of a narrow, sandy high tide beach, fronted by sandy tidal flats up to 2 km wide, that also contain patches of mangroves and rock flats. In addition, two small rock groynes have been built across the high tide beach.
