Island Head Creek is a wide, 25 km long tidal creek draining a large macrotidal estuary that enters the sea in lee of Island Head Island. The inlet is bedrock-controlled and is 1 to 2 km wide at its mouth. On the north side are two beaches that face east-south-east into the inlet channel.
The first beach (1311) begins at the sandy junction with Pinetrees Point Beach. The shoreline swings 90o while tidal sand shoals extend 2 km off the point toward Island Head Island. This beach is 1 km long with a narrow high tide beach cutting into higher foredunes, a 50 to 100 m wide low tide beach, then the deep inlet channel. It ends at a small, rocky headland on the other side of which is an 800 m long second beach (1312). This beach is similar is shape and extends to a second small, 40 m high headland that is tied to the beach by a small tombolo or spit. Both beaches are backed by 200 to 500 m of densely vegetated foredunes then the high ground rising to 500 m within 1 km of the inlet.
