South of Island Head the coast trends south-east, exposing the beaches to the Trades. High terrain rising to 600 m backs the coast, producing a predominantly steep, rocky coast for the first 5 km. There are just two 400 m long beaches in this section, both wedged into small valleys and bordered and backed by rocky slopes.
The first beach (1317) lies 1.5 km west of Brown Rock reef. It faces north-east and consists of a sandy high tide beach fronted by a 100 m wide low tide bar. Waves average only 0.3 m. The second beach (1318) lies 2 km north of Pearl Bay Beach. It faces east and receives waves averaging 0.4 m. When the waves are larger they produce three to four rips along the beach, including strong rips against the rocks.
