On the southern side of Thirsty Sound, opposite Quail Island, is the small but growing settlement of Plum Tree - the only settlement on the entire peninsula and exactly 100 km by gravel road from the highway at Kootandra. It has a store, fuel, caravan park and a good boat ramp. Most of the permanent residents who live in the area are fishermen who fish Broad Sound and Shoalwater Bay. While it is a long drive out to this area, it does have a beautiful coastline, with clean, sandy beaches and numerous headlands and creeks, as well as the biggest tides in eastern Australia.
Beach 1248 lies just west of Plum Tree and consists of a 2.5 km long, north facing high tide beach with tidal flats up to 800 m wide. The beach is backed by densely vegetated, rising slopes that are drained by four creeks. The main mangrove-fringed Parker Creek forms the eastern boundary of the beach, with three smaller creeks crossing the beach to the west.
