On the southern side of Thirsty Sound, opposite Quail Island, is the small but growing settlement of Plum Tree - the only settlement on the entire peninsula and exactly 100 km by gravel road from the highway at Kootandra. It has a store, fuel, caravan park and a good boat ramp. Most of the permanent residents who live in the area are fishermen who fish Broad Sound and Shoalwater Bay. While it is a long drive out to this area, it does have a beautiful coastline, with clean, sandy beaches and numerous headlands and creeks, as well as the biggest tides in eastern Australia. Plum Tree beach (1249) is more beachrock than beach and consists of a narrow, north-west facing high tide strip of sand fronted by a wider band of crenulate, coarse, boulder beachrock, that curves around toward Parker Creek mouth. The boat ramp is located toward the eastern end of the beach, with the store and settlement close behind.
