Stanage Point is a substantial 700 m wide headland beyond which the coast trends south-east for 23 km to Macdonald Point. In between are a series of sandy beaches which gradually decrease in wave energy, owing to the increasing protection of Shoalwater Bay. The first three beaches lie between Stanage Point and a 20 m high headland 2 km to the south. The headland and backing land have been cleared for grazing, and farm tracks of the Stanage Bay property lead to each of the beaches.
Beach 1257 is a 100 m long pocket of south-east facing, cobble high tide beach fronted by intertidal rock flats. The beach is backed by an amphitheatre of cleared slopes rising to 70 m on Bald Hill.
