Between the eastern shore of Haughton River mouth and Hughes Creek, 35 km to the east, is a series of very low energy beaches, interspersed with mangrove-fringed shores and tidal creeks. There is no vehicle access to any of the beaches and all are backed by an extensive tidal plain. Barramundi Creek Beach (884) is an arching, 2.5 km long, low sand spit, with dynamic recurved spits at either end. Consequently it changes shape and length over the years. It is backed by older spits separated by extensive mangrove forests, and fronted by 3 km wide tidal flats off the creek, that narrow to 500 m in the centre of the beach.
