Douglas Hill is the first hill and bedrock outcrop in Halifax Bay south of Hinchinbrook Island. The 50 m high hill forms the southern boundary to Balgal Beach and around its 1 km base are two small beaches, while on its south side the small settlement of Toomulla is located between the hill and the wandering mouth of Saltwater Creek. Toomulla lies just 2 km from the highway, with vehicle tracks also leading to the hill and the southern end of Balgal Beach. Toomulla Beach (843) extends from the small, rocky boundary with the point beach for approximately 800 m to the mouth of Saltwater Creek. It is backed by the small holiday settlement of Toomulla, that has several houses, a large camping area and phone, but no store. The length and shape of the beach depends on the shifting entrance and sand bars at the creek mouth. The beach faces north-east and receives waves averaging less than 0.5 m. These break across 300 to 500 m wide sand and rock flats off the creek mouth. The high tide beach has a moderate gradient and is up to 50 m wide, backed by a low, casuarina-covered foredune and houses.
Beach Length: 0.8km
