Cannonvale is the commercial centre of the Whitsundays and has a long history of white settlement. Cannonvale Beach (1014) is the traditional recreational beach for the area, although it has been overtaken more recently by Airlie Beach. The main Shute Harbour Road runs past the eastern end of the beach, with Beach Road backing most of the 400 m long, north facing beach. A large, traditional, wooden tidal pool is located in the centre of the beach, with a small, grassy park and an amenities block between the road and the beach. The beach consists of a 50 m wide, moderately steep high tide beach and 200 m wide low tide sand flats, fronted by an equally wide rock flat exposed at the lowest tides. A small creek drains out at the eastern end of the beach, beyond which mangroves fringe the shore.
