Mount Curlewis is a twin-peaked, 220 m high hill that dominates the southern shore of the bay. Along its base and to either side are 12 km of low energy beaches, bounded by the Elliott River and Splitters Creek and breached by Saltwater Creek. In addition to the extensive tidal shoals at the stream mouths, there are extensive shallow sand waves extending up to several hundred metres off the beaches. Mount Curlewis (west) beach (932) is a 750 m long spit of sand attached to the rocky western shore of the mount, with a natural groyne often forming its western boundary. A small, though mobile, creek mouth separates the beach from Saltwater Creek Beach.
