The southernmost corner of the bay is also the lowest energy, as well as the focus for the summer floods from Splitters and Branch Creeks. The end result is an extensive, 2 to 3 km wide, low-lying mangrove swamp, fronted by two low, low energy barrier islands - namely Splitters Creek and Branch Creek Beaches. Splitters Creek beach (935) is a low, crenulate, dynamic strip of sand. It is backed by extensive tidal channels and shoals, then mangroves, and faces north across several hundred metres of ridged tidal flats. It changes shape and length during floods and cyclones and is prone to overwashing.
