Hamilton Island is irregular in shape with an area of 600 ha and 23 km of predominantly rocky shoreline, including several well-protected, mangrove-filled bays. It is one of the more recently and most developed Whitsunday islands with its own airport and marina, as well as the islands' only high-rise resort. It has become a very popular destination and provides a wide range of facilities. The main resort and the high-rise overlook Catseye Bay - site of the island's main beach. The runway has been constructed across Crab Bay, while a small bay has been expanded and transformed into the marina and surrounding facilities. Catseye Bay beach (HAM1) is 800 m long, faces north-east and is backed by the resort and all its facilities, including a number of beach and water-based activities (Fig. 4.52). The beach is moderately steep and sandy at high to mid tide. However, low tide reveals a several hundred metre wide sand-rock and reef flat. A groyne has been built across the eastern end of the beach and there is a pontoon and small island breakwater off the beach. Waves are usually very low to calm.
